AEAI Summer Art Teacher Retreat 2013 Follow-Up

We just wrapped up the Art Teacher Retreat at St. Mary’s of the Woods College.  The art studios were hopping until late at night. It was the 10th anniversary of the retreat! There were 32 participants from all over the State!

Monday afternoon started with White Line Woodcuts inspired by the Provincetown printmakers taught by retreat organizers, Trish Korte & Kevin Schultz. The finished woodcut was then painted with watercolors and transferred to arches paper. Here are a few of the works created:

Monday evening we learned about Viking Knit Bracelets from RoAnn Thompson. The transformation of knitted wire being pulled through a series of holes in a wood block created a very tight mesh. Adding beads and a closure were the finishing touches.

Tuesday we learned about Mexican Painted Floor Cloths from Mary Sorrells, who shared her Lilly Grant experience of studying this process from an artist in Mexico last summer. We learned new painting techniques and many participants applied this new knowledge to their floor cloth creations. We appreciated the acrylic paints & mediums donated by Chroma, Inc. for this workshop.

Mary Sorrells talks about painting techniques for floor cloth painting.
David Henke taught us about casting slip molds. We deconstructed the slip molds and reconstructed them for some exciting and sometimes bizarre combinations. We also had clay and underglazes donated by Brickyard Ceramics in Indianapolis. Some participants combined slip cast mold pieces with slab molds.
