Two of our very own District 7 members were awarded AEAI Outstanding Art Educator Awards!!

Congratulations go to Trish Korte, who teaches AP Art, Advanced Drawing, Fiber Arts, and Ceramics at New Albany High School, and is the District 7 Co-Rep. She was awarded the Outstanding High School Art Educator for 2011.

Our Liaison for Scott County, Michelle Chastain, was awarded the Outstanding Middle School Art Educator for 2011. Michelle teaches art at Scottsville Middle School. Congratulations to Michelle!

Be sure to meet these inspiring ladies at the AEAI Fall Convention which is coming up next month on November 4, 5, & 6 in Indianapolis. They are both high energy, positive forces in Arts Education in their schools and the community.

District 7 Harrison County liaison & K-12 Art Educator, David Henke, was featured in a recent article in the Indiana section of The Courier Journal dated Saturday, October 1, 2011. David's students were studying the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and were directed to create their own depiction of one of the stages of life of the butterfly in the form of a clay tile. It's a great article that features David and his students working across the curriculum incorporating science into the art classroom. Katie Stotts, a Senior at New Albany High School, was recognized at the St. James Art Fair for winning a $2000 art scholarship in photography. Katie is a Media Arts student of Kevin Schultz, AEAI District 7 Co-Representative. This is a photo of Katie with her photography portfolio featured at the Weber Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky.

The summer has slipped away and we are now back in our classrooms, writing lessons, reviewing new standards. We hope your year is off to a great start!

Trish had a wonderful opportunity to attend TICA (Teacher Institute Contemporary Art) at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Days of intense studio and the opportunity to meet with contemporary artists exhibiting today and working along with the most amazing Art teachers from around the country!

Following TICA, Kevin and Trish enjoyed more creative endeavors with some of the wonderful teachers from across our State! The annual retreat at St. Mary’s of the Woods College was again rewarding and productive. Lessons and techniques, so generously shared, ignite the passion we hope to communicate in the classroom. We are so pleased that we had representatives attend from several counties within our district.

At the AEAI summer retreat at St. Mary's of the Woods College, we had 4 days with our colleagues where Deena Church shared jewelry making techniques, Professor Bonnie Zimmer facilitated a collaborative mandala and basketry techniques celebrating our cultural pasts with an admiration for the skills of our ancestors. We also had the opportunity to practice our skills in figure drawing, painting, and ceramics; endeavors that we find difficult to schedule in during our busy school year.

Please plan to attend the annual AEAI State Convention. Working with like-minded individuals is so rewarding. We hope you take advantage of all that our colleagues have to offer at the State Convention the first weekend in November, Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6. We will be offering an art workshop in Asian Folded Poetry Books.

Louisville Metro Region of the National Scholastic Art Awards

The 2010 Louisville Metropolitan Region of the National Scholastic Art Awards is currently exhibiting Gold Key and American Visions Winners at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft located in Louisville, Kentucky. Our district had several counties with students work juried into this show. District 7 schools in Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties had students recognized. The Scholastic Art exhibit will be up through Feburary 26 featuring amazing works from very talented middle and high school artists in the region.

A New Year!

Happy New Year! Plans are in the works for a spring workshop for District 7. After reviewing our surveys from the AEAI State Conference, we determined that a technology workshop would be beneficial to many of our members. Look for more information in early spring. Please let us know if you have any specific topics that you would like us to cover.

The AEAI Contact Magazine is requesting submissions for innovative lesson plans to be featured in the the magazine. If you have a cutting edge lesson that you would like to share, please send it to Jane Lohmeyer at Jane.Lohmeyer@valpo.edu.

Trish and I are gearing up for the NAEA National Conference in Baltimore, April 14-18. We are really excited about getting into the David Chang workshops. There is always so much to do. If you're not careful, you can get overloaded. Fit in as much as you can, but don't over do it. Let us know if you are going. We can rendezvous to share information over a bucket of crab legs! Yum!

St. Mary's Summer Art Teacher Retreat 2009

District 7 Co-reps, Kevin and Trish, just returned from the St. Mary's Summer Art Teacher Retreat. We had a very productive experience where we learned how to craft tri-pod vessels in clay and create clay caricatures. We also made tie dye t-shirts and beautifully colored batiks. The studio was open to work as late as needed so there were a few highly driven artists working to the wee hours of the night.

Trish and I had the privilege of meeting other art teachers from around the state and gleaned much advice on how to best service our district. We are currently planning a fall activity which will occur in Jennings County in October. Former District 7 Rep, Karen Chilman, has been kind enough to offer her beautiful studio to our group for a pleine-air painting excursion. Jennings county is very centrally located to all of our members, so we hope you will consider attending. There is so much we can learn from each other and it is always a joy to meet others with the passion for art. We will be sending information out to you when the details are worked out. It will probably on the second week-end in October so keep your calendars open.

We hope that you are considering attending the AEAI Fall Conference which will be held at IUPUI on November 12, 13 & 14. There will be many workshops offered and early registration is important. Registration is on-line this year so check out the AEAI website for more information.

The next AEAI Elementary Division meeting/workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Fort Wayne, Indiana from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
We will begin our meeting/workshop exploring new product materials at

Hello. My name is Kevin Schultz and I teach Media Arts and Drawing at New Albany High School in District 7. I have recently been appointed an interim C0-Representative for District 7 with my good friend and colleague, Trish Korte. We are excited about this opportunity and hope that we can serve our district and the AEAI well with this new responsibility.

The 2008 Art Education Association of Indiana State Conference is rapidly approaching. French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana, is the location of the AEAI conference this year. Be sure check out the Art Education Association of Indiana website to see the list of wonderful workshops and collaborative activities available. Don't forget that there will be a free district workshop for all of the members of this district attending the state conference. It is a great time to participate in professional development!
